Chula Vista Double Homicide: Warrant Served, Charges Filed, Suspect Held in Ohio

San Diego prosecutors have filed the case, with extradition proceedings pending.

Overview

  • Police say the victims, Abdul Hasan and Paz Gojar, were found dead Feb. 21 in their Paseo Carina apartment after a welfare check, and autopsies determined both were fatally stabbed.
  • Investigators believe the killings occurred Jan. 29 and that Hasan was attacked first before Gojar, according to the department’s account.
  • Detectives identified Ohio resident Steven Cleveland as a person of interest, learned he left for Kentucky, and he was arrested April 3 in Knoxville on an unrelated warrant.
  • An Oct. 22 arrest warrant in the Chula Vista case charges Cleveland with murder and auto theft, and the warrant has been served as he remains at Tri-County Regional Jail in Mechanicsburg, Ohio.
  • Chula Vista police say the case has been submitted to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, which has filed murder and related charges following multi-state cooperation.
