Chuck Negron, Three Dog Night Co-Founder and Voice of 'Joy to the World,' Dies at 83

His publicist said he died at home in Studio City of complications from heart failure alongside long-term COPD.

Overview

  • A founding lead vocalist of Three Dog Night, Negron sang on signature tracks including "One," "An Old Fashioned Love Song," "Easy to Be Hard" and "The Show Must Go On."
  • Formed with Danny Hutton and Cory Wells in 1967, the group became a chart force with 21 Top 40 singles during its late-1960s and early-1970s run.
  • Negron was dismissed in 1985 after prolonged drug addiction, later achieving sobriety in 1991 and releasing seven solo albums between 1995 and 2017.
  • After decades of estrangement, he reconciled with Hutton last year in a private visit both later described as a meaningful reunion.
  • Survivors include his wife, Ami Albea Negron, and five children, among them Berry Oakley Jr., as well as extended family noted in the publicist’s statement.
