Chubut Confirms Puerto Patriada Wildfire Was Deliberate as Evacuations and Probe Expand

Prosecutors’ confirmation refocuses efforts on a criminal investigation alongside ongoing suppression of the largest front at Puerto Patriada.

Overview

  • Governor Ignacio Torres said more than 3,000 tourists were evacuated, with precautionary plans in place for nearby Epuyén.
  • Roughly 1,800 hectares have burned at Puerto Patriada, which authorities describe as the most concerning active front.
  • Officials report five concurrent fires: Cholila is controlled and was also determined to be set, El Turbio is 90% contained, Los Alerces remains active, and Lago Engaño is controlled.
  • Over 180 wildfire fighters and more than 100 logistics staff are deployed with five water‑bombing planes and a helicopter, supported by Neuquén, Córdoba, Río Negro, Santiago del Estero and the national fire service.
  • Threats to a provincial brigade and the discovery of grenades in Epuyén are under investigation led by prosecutor Carlos Díaz-Mayer, as the governor vows prison terms for those responsible.
