Chrome for iPhone Tests Guided Safari Data Import as Apple Preps Transfer to Android

The moves reflect pressure from EU Digital Markets Act portability requirements.

Overview

  • Google is testing a guided Safari import in Chrome 145 for iPhone via TestFlight that enables on-device migration.
  • The flow uses the ZIP produced by Settings > Safari > Export Browsing Data, which Chrome reads to display a summary before importing.
  • Users can choose to bring over bookmarks, browsing history, passwords and credit cards, with a notice that the data will be saved to their Google Account.
  • After the import finishes, Chrome prompts users to delete the exported ZIP to limit exposure of sensitive information.
  • Apple is developing an iOS 26 Transfer to Android feature for device-to-device moves of photos, messages, notes, apps, passwords and a phone number, and both efforts are presented as aligned with EU rules, with Chrome’s addition expected to reach public release after the current beta.
