Chrome Adds Auto-Revocation of Noisy Site Notifications in Safety Check

Google says the change cuts notification overload with little effect on overall clicks.

Overview

  • Chrome for Android and desktop will turn off notifications from websites with very low engagement that send high volumes of alerts.
  • The capability is integrated into Safety Check, extending its role beyond cleaning up unused camera and location permissions.
  • Users will see an alert when Chrome unsubscribes a site and can restore permissions via Settings > Safety Check or by revisiting the site.
  • Installed Progressive Web Apps are exempt from auto-revocation, and a global opt-out is available.
  • Google reports testing showed a significant drop in noisy alerts, with under 1% of notifications receiving any interaction and lower-volume senders seeing higher click rates.
