Christine Gerbich to Lead Museum Utopie und Alltag With Funding Boost and Exhibition Overhaul

The new director plans a youth-focused, participatory redesign timed to the Berlin Wall anniversary.

Overview

  • Gerbich assumes leadership of the Dokumentationszentrum Alltagskultur der DDR and the Kunstarchiv Beeskow on October 1.
  • Brandenburg will raise the Dokumentationszentrum’s subsidy by €80,000 to €230,000 next year with a five-year funding term.
  • The Kunstarchiv Beeskow will receive nearly €177,000 from the state, while Landkreis Oder-Spree contributes about €547,000 annually to both institutions.
  • A partly renewed permanent exhibition is planned to open in 2029 with contributors bringing lived experience to the curation.
  • The museum holds roughly 170,000 everyday GDR objects, and Gerbich aims to draw more young visitors and use the spaces as places of encounter.
