Christine Drazan Appointed to Oregon’s Senate District 26, Succeeding Daniel Bonham

Support from Clackamas County commissioners delivered the decisive votes under Oregon’s vacancy rules.

Overview

  • County commissioners from Clackamas, Hood River, Multnomah and Wasco selected Drazan in a joint meeting over Rep. Jeff Helfrich.
  • Drazan will serve the remainder of the term through January 2027.
  • Bonham endorsed Drazan, and although Helfrich drew more individual commissioner votes, Clackamas County’s heavier vote share secured her appointment.
  • Several Republican aides and lawmakers report she may announce a 2026 gubernatorial bid soon, and she did not rule it out when asked; her spokesperson declined comment.
  • Bonham resigned on Oct. 5 and was later reported nominated to assist U.S. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, and Drazan brings experience as a former House GOP leader and 2022 gubernatorial nominee.
