Daniel Barenboim, Thielemann's predecessor, was celebrated as 'Honorary Chief Conductor' and an honorary member of the Staatsoper.
Thielemann's concert program featured works by Mendelssohn, Schönberg, and Canadian composer Samy Moussa.
Barenboim, who stepped down due to health reasons, plans to perform at the Staatsoper again in November.
Joe Chialo, Berlin's Culture Senator, praised Barenboim's contributions to the city during the ceremony.
