CHP Probes Two Deadly I-10 Crashes in Coachella Valley

CHP says impairment is not suspected in either crash.

Overview

  • Two separate wrecks on Interstate 10 in the Coachella Valley left four people dead and at least six injured.
  • In Thousand Palms, a heavy truck crossed the center divider and hit a cement truck, a Jeep, and other vehicles, killing the 62-year-old cement-truck driver.
  • Six others suffered minor to moderate injuries, with patients taken to Desert Regional and Eisenhower medical centers, and the 38-year-old truck driver was hospitalized with serious injuries.
  • Near Coachella, a Toyota Camry driving west in the eastbound lanes struck a Honda Accord head-on, killing the 71-year-old Camry driver and both people in the Accord, including a 50-year-old woman from Phoenix.
  • CHP is investigating both collisions, says alcohol or drugs are not suspected, and asks anyone with tips to call 760-772-5300; the reason the Camry was traveling the wrong way remains under review.
