CHP: Phone Distraction Led to Deadly San Mateo–Hayward Bridge Crash

Investigators say a van driver struck a stalled sedan at the bridge’s midspan, forcing an hours-long shutdown of westbound lanes.

  • Caltrans urged alternate routes as a Sig-alert remained in effect, and the coroner is withholding the victim’s identity while the CHP continues its investigation.
