CHP: Phone Distraction Led to Deadly San Mateo–Hayward Bridge Crash

Investigators say a van driver struck a stalled sedan at the bridge’s midspan, forcing an hours-long shutdown of westbound lanes.

Overview

  • The collision occurred around 2:50 p.m. Tuesday in the westbound lanes of Highway 92 near the bridge’s midpoint, according to the CHP.
  • A Kia sedan stalled in the middle lane before being hit by a Ford van whose driver looked down at a cellphone, based on the preliminary CHP account.
  • The sedan’s driver died at the scene, and a passenger in the van suffered major injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
  • All westbound lanes were closed and traffic was diverted to Clawiter Road in Hayward until about 7:45 p.m., causing extensive backups.
  • Caltrans urged alternate routes as a Sig-alert remained in effect, and the coroner is withholding the victim’s identity while the CHP continues its investigation.
