CHP Launches 30-Hour Christmas Patrol Targeting Impaired Driving and Speeding

Officials cite last year's arrests, fatalities to push safer choices during a forecast storm.

  • The holiday enforcement period runs from 6 p.m. on Dec. 24 through 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 25 with officers deployed statewide.
  • Patrols will concentrate on suspected drunk or drug-impaired motorists as well as drivers exceeding the speed limit.
  • A significant storm is expected during the operation, and drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and watch for standing water, rockslides, mud, and icy pavement.
  • Last Christmas, CHP reported over 300 DUI arrests, 2,251 speeding citations with 132 over 100 mph, and at least 17 traffic deaths.
  • CHP highlighted its FAST initiative using 100 low‑profile marked units to curb speeding, and a New Year’s Eve enforcement is also planned.
