CHP Investigates Emergency Plane Landing That Blocked I-805 South

Safety crews reopened all southbound lanes of the freeway after occupants escaped unharmed from the aircraft’s emergency touchdown

Overview

  • The 1980 Piper PA-28-181, call sign N8150J, departed Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport at 5:05 p.m. and conducted a half-hour coastal flight before diverting to the highway
  • At 5:38 p.m. Saturday, the single-engine plane touched down in the southbound lanes at Carroll Canyon Road and came to rest against the center median
  • Neither of the two people onboard sustained injuries as they walked away from the aircraft before first responders arrived
  • A SIGALERT was issued around 5:45 p.m., diverting southbound traffic off at Sorrento Valley Road while northbound lanes remained unaffected
  • Most southbound lanes reopened by about 6:50 p.m., with the final HOV and No. 1 lanes cleared around 9 p.m., and CHP officers are now assessing what prompted the emergency landing
