CHP Arrests Suspect in Highway 24 Shooting as Separate I-80/I-880 Probe Continues

  • Carlos Ray Thomas, 57, of Oakland was booked on suspicion of attempted murder after crashing on southbound I-680 near Walnut Creek, where officers recovered a firearm.
  • Investigators say the Highway 24 incident near the Caldecott Tunnel involved gunfire between vehicles and at least three cars were struck, with no reported injuries at that scene.
  • Eastbound Highway 24 traffic was diverted to Highway 13 from about 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the investigation before lanes reopened.
  • A separate case on the eastbound I-80 to southbound I-880 ramp in Oakland left one driver injured by shrapnel in a reported road-rage encounter, and no arrest has been announced.
  • Thomas is being held at Alameda County jail without bail with an arraignment set for Monday, while CHP continues to investigate the Friday morning shooting and search for a suspect.
