Much of the Sudanese capital's health and sanitation infrastructure, including this Khartoum hospital, was devastated by two years of fighting between the regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Overview

  • Sudan’s Health Ministry reported 172 deaths and more than 2,500 new cholera infections across six states in the past week, with 90 percent concentrated in Khartoum state.
  • Médecins Sans Frontières treated nearly 2,000 suspected cholera cases last week in Omdurman and warned that treatment centers are overwhelmed.
  • Health Minister Haitham Ibrahim attributed the surge to returning displaced residents stretching Khartoum’s water supplies and forcing use of untreated sources.
  • Two years of conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have crippled healthcare infrastructure, forcing up to 90 percent of hospitals to close at times.
  • The outbreak has spread regionally, with South Sudan reporting over 54,800 cholera cases and 1,000 deaths since late September as it hosts more than 350,000 Sudanese refugees.
