Chino Hills House Explosion Blamed on Gas Leak as Origin Still Unclear

Fire investigators with SoCalGas are working to pinpoint the leak's source.

Overview

  • The Chino Valley Fire District said a gas leak caused the Nov. 16 blast at a home on the 4200 block of Sierra Vista Drive.
  • Eight people were hospitalized, according to fire officials, though the sheriff's department reports nine injured including three adults and six children ages 6 to 15.
  • One house sustained major damage, with five neighboring homes reporting shattered windows and other minor damage.
  • Sixteen homes were evacuated as gas service was shut down; the leak was stopped around 10:45 p.m., and residents of unaffected homes returned about 11 p.m.
  • SoCalGas later shut off about a dozen customer meters in the neighborhood as a precaution while inspections and the broader investigation continue.
