Chinese Woman Dies in Rare Case of Human Infection with H3N8 Bird Flu: WHO

A 56-year-old woman in China with underlying health conditions has died after being infected with a rare strain of avian influenza known as H3N8, according to the World Health Organization.
The woman had frequent exposure to live poultry and the virus was detected at a wet market she visited.
While the H3N8 strain can infect humans, it cannot be transmitted between people and the risk to the general public is considered low.
Health officials are monitoring the situation but no other human cases have been detected and the virus appears limited to the single, isolated infection.
H3N8 influenza is commonly found in birds and horses but rarely causes symptoms in these animals or humans.
