Chinese Tech Giants Place Massive Orders for Nvidia RTX PRO 5500 Cards

The purchases test Nvidia's constrained 2027 production and push demand toward the most powerful chips still allowed for sale to China.

Overview

  • ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have reportedly ordered more than 3 million RTX PRO 5500 cards with a combined sticker value above $35 billion while Nvidia has warned it may not be able to fill those orders and has signaled a likely production cap near 3 million cards in 2027.
  • The RTX PRO 5500 is a workstation‑class GPU that is less powerful than Nvidia's H200 and B300 data‑center chips but is designed to comply with U.S. export controls and is being targeted for AI inference workloads such as running chatbots.
  • Nvidia has told partners to expect early samples in December and commercial shipments in the first quarter of 2027, and sources say wafer allocation at TSMC to Nvidia's Rubin platform will limit volumes available for the PRO 5500.
  • Reported total demand from Chinese customers exceeds 6 million cards, dealers and a Shenzhen company filing show, and the supply squeeze has already pushed prices and secondary‑market values higher for reduced‑capability Nvidia products.
  • If deliveries are limited or delayed, Chinese firms may accelerate use of domestic chips or redesign deployments, which could raise costs for services and slow rollout of AI products while final shipments remain subject to export licensing and Chinese regulatory review.
