Chinese Fighter Jet Comes Dangerously Close to US B-52 Bomber Over South China Sea, Pentagon Reports

Rising tension as over 180 similar incidents have been reported since 2021; incident underscores risk for collision in disputed South China Sea amid heightened military activity

A Chinese fighter jet flew at 'excessive speed' and came within 10ft (3m) of a US B-52 bomber over the South China Sea, which according to the US Indo-Pacific Command, put both aircrafts at risk of collision.
This incident was one of 180+ similar incidents reported since 2021, which the Defense Department categorizes as 'unsafe' and 'unprofessional'.
Most of these incidents occurred during the night, often when visibility is limited.
China blamed the US for the recent incident, asserting that the US was purposely provoking by conducting operations in what the US claims as 'international airspace' and what China declares its own territory.
In a similar instance in May, China demanded that Washington cease such flights over the South China Sea.
Interceptions are quite common, however, this incident is perceived as alarming due to the escalating tension between the two nations, raising concerns of a potential mishap or intentional conflict in the disputed South China Sea.
