Chinatown Cleaver Killing: Suspect Held Without Bail as Police Seek Brooklyn Stabbing Attacker

Overview

  • Feizhon Zheng, 50, was charged with murder in the Oct. 4 killing at 7 Eldridge St., where 69-year-old Jianwu Liu was fatally wounded.
  • A criminal complaint says a bystander disarmed Zheng of a knife, after which he left and returned about 20 minutes later with a cleaver and stabbed Liu in the back of the shoulder.
  • Zheng was arrested Saturday, pleaded not guilty Sunday in Manhattan Criminal Court, and is being held without bail; police say he does not live in the building.
  • In a separate case that morning in East New York, 34-year-old Luis Gonzalez died after being stabbed near Glenmore and Sheffield Avenues, with the suspect described as a man in all black and still at large as police seek tips.
  • Local data show felony assaults up 20.7% this year in Manhattan’s 5th Precinct, while murders in Brooklyn’s 75th Precinct are up nearly 38% year to date compared with 2024.
