China’s Power-Battery Output Jumps in October as CATL Begins Mass Production of 5th‑Gen LFP Cells

LFP now supplies about 80% of new installed capacity in China, signaling a decisive shift in battery chemistry for EVs.

Overview

  • China produced 170.6 GWh of power and other batteries in October, up 12.9% month on month and 50.5% year on year, with sales at 166.0 GWh rising 13.3% and 50.8% respectively.
  • Domestic battery installations reached 84.1 GWh in October, up 10.7% from September and 42.1% from a year earlier.
  • LFP accounted for 67.5 GWh, or 80.3% of October installations, while ternary cells totaled 16.5 GWh for a 19.7% share.
  • Exports totaled 28.2 GWh in October, including 19.4 GWh of power batteries, bringing January–October exports to 228.1 GWh.
  • CATL led October installations across both LFP and ternary chemistries and held 42.25% of new-energy passenger-car installs, as it announced mass production of its fifth-generation LFP cells and reported Q3 net profit of roughly RMB 18.55 billion, up 41.21% year on year.
