China's National Day Holiday Sees Record Travel Surge

Despite high travel numbers, consumer spending remains cautious compared to pre-pandemic levels.

  • During the National Day holiday, China recorded 765 million domestic tourist trips, marking a 5.9% increase from the previous year.
  • Railway passenger trips reached 177 million over the 10-day period, with October 1 setting a new single-day record of 21.45 million trips.
  • Cross-border travel neared pre-pandemic levels with over 13 million trips, reflecting a 25.8% year-on-year increase.
  • While total travel expenditure rose to 700.82 billion yuan, per capita spending was 2% lower than in 2019.
  • Consumer spending showed a preference for experiences and affordable travel options, with a notable rise in domestic and short-distance trips.
