China’s Fighter Jets Intercept Japanese Patrol Aircraft Near Dual Carriers in Pacific

Tokyo has demanded that Beijing adopt new measures to prevent repeats of the lengthy intercepts over international waters.

  • China deployed its carriers CNS Liaoning and CNS Shandong east of the first island chain on June 7, extending its naval presence in the western Pacific.
  • On June 7 and 8, J-15 fighters from Shandong intercepted Japanese P-3C patrol planes for approximately 40 and 80 minutes respectively.
