Overview
- The State Council decree signed by Premier Li Qiang on August 14 adds the K visa as a new ordinary category to China’s visa system.
- The visa takes effect October 1 and removes the need for a Chinese employer or inviting organization.
- It targets early-career STEM professionals and researchers holding a bachelor’s degree or higher from prestigious universities or research institutions.
- K visa holders will be allowed multiple entries, longer validity periods and extended stay durations for activities in education, scientific research, technology development and cultural exchange.
- China’s Ministry of Justice, Foreign Ministry, Public Security Ministry and National Immigration Administration will manage issuance, extensions and renewals in coordination with overseas embassies and consulates.
