China Sets Provisional Anti-Subsidy Tariffs of 21.9%–42.7% on EU Dairy

Brussels calls the move unjustified, citing a flawed probe scheduled to conclude in February 2026.

Overview

  • China’s commerce ministry said the measures take effect Tuesday and cover products such as fresh and processed cheeses, blue cheeses, and certain milks and creams.
  • The duties will be collected as provisional countervailing deposits at the border pending a final decision in the ongoing investigation.
  • Investigators issued a preliminary finding that EU dairy products receive subsidies that cause material injury to China’s domestic industry.
  • The European Commission rejected the conclusions as based on insufficient evidence, pledged to defend EU farmers and exporters, and noted it has brought the matter to the WTO.
  • The step comes shortly after the EU’s decision to impose high tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and follows China’s December 17 move to finalize lower antidumping duties on EU pork.
