China Set to Retain No. 1 Car Exporter Rank for Third Year

A surge in electric-vehicle shipments is propelling the lead as monthly exports roughly double from last year.

Overview

  • China exported 4.95 million vehicles in the first three quarters of 2025, compared with 3.06 million from Japan.
  • An industry official said EVs are the main driver, with average monthly EV exports rising to about 200,000 from roughly 100,000 a year earlier.
  • European demand is accelerating, with 430,000 new Chinese cars registered in the region in the first eight months of 2025, up 74% year over year.
  • Chinese brands are displacing some established rivals in Europe, as BYD’s sales surpassed Suzuki’s and Chery’s exceeded Mitsubishi’s.
  • Automakers are reinforcing their position through local footholds in Europe, with BYD and Chery building factories and GAC, Geely, and Xpeng opening R&D and engineering centers.
