China Sentences Former Agriculture Minister to Death With Two-Year Reprieve for $37.6 Million in Bribes

The punishment is being cast as a flagship outcome of Xi Jinping’s long-running anti-corruption drive.

Overview

  • The Intermediate People’s Court of Changchun in Jilin announced the verdict on Sept. 28–29 after a July 25 trial.
  • Prosecutors said Tang Renjian accepted more than 268 million yuan in cash and goods from 2007 to 2024 in exchange for business favors, project contracts and personnel moves.
  • The court ordered full confiscation of his personal assets, recovery of illicit gains to the national treasury and lifelong deprivation of political rights.
  • The death sentence carries a two-year suspension that can be commuted to life imprisonment under Chinese practice if conditions are met.
  • State accounts say Tang confessed and expressed remorse; he was investigated starting in May 2024, removed from his post and later expelled from the Communist Party.
