Overview

  • The Liaoning and three escort ships entered Japan’s exclusive economic zone near Minamitori island on June 7, marking the first carrier presence in that area.
  • After exiting the EEZ on June 8, the Liaoning conducted fighter jet and helicopter take-off and landing drills, according to Japan’s defence ministry.
  • Japan deployed the destroyer Haguro to shadow the task group and formally conveyed its objections to Beijing over the incursion.
  • China’s newest carrier, the Fujian, carried out flight operations in the Yellow Sea’s Provisional Measures Zone from May 22 to 28, the first such deployment in that disputed area.
  • US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s public remarks on possible troop reductions in South Korea underscore a wider American review of its Indo-Pacific security commitments.
