China Removes Admiral Miao Hua From Central Military Commission

Overview

  • The NPC Standing Committee voted on June 27 to oust Miao from his CMC post following his suspension in November for serious disciplinary violations.
  • He was expelled from the National People’s Congress in April as the corruption probe into his tenure as political work chief intensified.
  • Miao is the eighth CMC member to be dismissed under Xi Jinping’s anti-graft campaign targeting both high-ranking officers and defense industry executives since 2012.
  • Investigations into defense procurement corruption have also ensnared two successive defense ministers, Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe, and two heads of the PLA Rocket Force.
  • General He Weidong, a vice-chair of the CMC, has not appeared publicly since March and is reportedly under investigation according to media reports.
