Overview
- China’s State Administration for Market Regulation issued recall orders on Aug 21–22 that cover more than four million vehicles with hard-to-find mechanical emergency door releases.
- Tesla accounts for the largest share with about 2.98 million cars recalled for door-handle issues and a separate recall of roughly 2.7–2.74 million vehicles over inadequate driver-monitoring methods.
- Remedies ordered include added warning labels, over-the-air software updates to lower windows after crashes, activation of interior-camera monitoring and selective part replacements, with Tesla’s door-handle remedy scheduled to start on Sept. 25.
- The regulator said the measures respond to cases where electrically actuated recessed handles became hard to operate after power loss, including accidents that left occupants trapped or fatally injured.
- The actions signal a policy shift that will force design changes in China’s big electric-vehicle market, influence global makers and invite follow-up scrutiny from overseas agencies such as the U.S. NHTSA.
