China Opens World’s Highest Bridge in Guizhou, Slashing a Two-Hour Detour to Two Minutes

Built with a 1,420-metre main span after extensive load testing, the crossing is expected to speed travel and tourism in Guizhou’s canyon region.

Overview

  • State media aired live drone footage on Sept 28 showing vehicles crossing the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge during an opening ceremony.
  • The deck stands 625 metres above the Beipan River, overtaking Guizhou’s Beipanjiang Bridge (565 metres) as the world record-holder for height.
  • Authorities say the bridge’s 1,420-metre main span is the largest for a bridge built in mountainous terrain, with a total length of about 2,890 metres.
  • Provincial transport chief Zhang Yin said the new route cuts the journey between the two sides from roughly two hours to about two minutes.
  • Construction took about three years and followed August load tests using 96 trucks and dense sensor monitoring, with officials citing wind-resistance advances and 21 authorised patents.
