China Launches 'Mission of Justice-2025' Live-Fire Drills Around Taiwan

Beijing frames the operation as a warning to separatists, signaling costs for foreign interference.

Overview

  • The PLA said the exercises began on December 29 and will continue on December 30 around the island under the name Mission of Justice-2025.
  • Ground, navy, air force and rocket force units are participating in the multi-branch maneuvers.
  • Command spokesman Shi Yi described the drills as a serious warning to advocates of Taiwan independence and to external interveners.
  • Operational tasks include combat air and maritime patrols, seizing control, blocking key ports and areas, joint strikes and what China called multidimensional deterrence beyond the island chain, with five restricted zones designated.
  • Taiwan’s defense ministry condemned the drills as irrational provocations, reported two PLA aircraft and 11 ships near the island in the past day, and said its forces are on heightened readiness with rapid-response training underway.
