China Issues Bounties for Two Taiwanese Influencers Accused of Separatism

Taipei rejects Beijing’s jurisdiction, calling the rewards a coercive show intended to sow fear.

Overview

  • Police in Quanzhou, Fujian, on Nov. 13 issued wanted notices with rewards of 50,000 to 250,000 yuan (up to about US$35,000) for tips leading to the capture of two Taiwanese creators.
  • The notice names Wen Tzu-yu (Wen Ziyu) and Chen Po-yuan, alleging they spread separatist remarks and smeared mainland policies benefiting Taiwanese compatriots.
  • China’s Taiwan Affairs Office endorsed the move, with spokesman Chen Binhua calling the measure justified and necessary.
  • Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council dismissed the notice as just for show and extrajurisdictional intimidation, while both influencers publicly shrugged off the threats on Threads.
  • The case follows Wen’s widely viewed documentary on Beijing courting Taiwanese influencers and mirrors recent mainland actions, including an October probe into lawmaker Puma Shen.
