Almost all EU brandy is cognac produced in France, exports of which are worth 1.4 billion euros ($1.6 billion) per year

Overview

  • The duties take effect on July 5 and will remain in place for five years.
  • Jas Hennessy faces a 34.9% levy, Rémy Martin 34.3% and Martell 27.7% on imports.
  • The tariffs apply only to brandy shipped in containers of less than 200 liters.
  • Leading producers can sidestep the duties if they commit to minimum selling prices in China.
  • Beijing opened its probe in January 2024 as a direct response to the EU’s investigation into subsidies for Chinese electric vehicles.
