China Imposes Provisional Antidumping Tariffs on EU Pork Effective Sept. 10

The step follows a dumping inquiry widely seen as retaliation for EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

Overview

  • Beijing set provisional duties of 15.6% to 62.4% on EU pork, to be collected as deposits at customs starting September 10.
  • The Ministry of Commerce said a preliminary finding showed dumping and harm to China’s pork industry, with the investigation running through December.
  • The European Commission pledged to take all necessary measures to defend EU producers and industries in response.
  • European pork representatives warned of export disruptions and downward pressure on producer prices, calling the move very bad news for the sector.
  • China is the world’s largest pork consumer, importing 4.3 billion yuan of Spanish pork last year, while France shipped 115,000 tonnes to China in 2024.
