China Import Expo Closes With Record $83.5 Billion in Intended Deals Following Busan Leaders’ Framework

Revived U.S. interest contrasts with warnings that many agreements remain tentative.

Overview

  • Chinese buyers announced $83.49 billion in intended imports, up 4.4% from last year and the fifth straight annual high, according to the CIIE Bureau.
  • U.S. exhibitors reported a more positive outlook after the Busan framework, with the U.S. pavilion about 50% larger and still the expo’s largest display area.
  • Industry groups said China recently resumed purchases of U.S. soybeans and sorghum, though a 13% tariff on U.S. soybeans continues to constrain commercial buying.
  • The expo drew participation from more than 155 countries and regions and over 4,100 overseas enterprises, the commerce ministry said.
  • Organisers noted many contracts are preliminary, and analysts cautioned the détente could be fragile given remaining tariffs and a trade surplus on track to surpass last year’s record.
