Overview

  • 233 children at Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui tested with abnormally high lead levels, and 201 have been hospitalized.
  • Authorities have detained principal Zhu, investor Li and six other people for their suspected roles in the lead contamination.
  • Food samples from the school, including date cakes and corn rolls, showed lead concentrations up to 1,340 mg/kg, over 2,000 times the national safety limit.
  • Preliminary tests at other kindergartens affiliated with Peixin returned normal lead readings, suggesting the contamination was confined to the Tianshui school.
  • Local authorities have launched a broader investigation into the kindergarten’s food safety practices as all affected families receive free medical treatment.
