Overview

  • Japan’s Ministry of Defense reported that the Liaoning and Shandong carriers operated simultaneously within its exclusive economic zones around Okinotori and Minamitorishima islands.
  • The Liaoning crossed the strategic second island chain for the first time, reaching areas east of Guam during weekend maneuvers.
  • Both carriers conducted flight operations with fighter jets and helicopters to sharpen Beijing’s ability to project power into distant ocean regions.
  • Tokyo said it delivered an appropriate message to Beijing and has deployed additional ships and aircraft to bolster maritime and air surveillance.
  • The United States is closely monitoring the dual carrier deployment as China’s third carrier, Fujian, continues sea trials and promises to further expand Beijing’s blue-water capabilities.
