China Condemns Canadian and Australian Warships’ Taiwan Strait Transit

Beijing labeled the passage a provocation, while Canada described the mission as part of Operation Horizon in support of regional stability.

Overview

  • The PLA Eastern Theatre Command said it organised naval and air forces to track the entire transit and accused the vessels of causing trouble and sending the wrong signals.
  • The ships were identified as Canadian frigate HMCS Ville de Québec and Australian guided‑missile destroyer HMAS Brisbane.
  • Taiwan’s defense ministry reported close monitoring of the strait and said it dispatched appropriate air and naval forces to ensure security and stability.
  • Canada said Ville de Québec is deployed under Operation Horizon to promote peace and stability in the Indo‑Pacific and noted recent activities in the Philippine economic zone linked to freedom of navigation exercises.
  • Western partners, including the United States, conduct periodic transits they regard as lawful in an international waterway, while China claims jurisdiction over the strait and has stepped up military activity around Taiwan.
