China Cancels Haikou Flights as Typhoon Matmo Nears Hainan During National Day Rush

Escalating storm alerts point to a possible Sunday landfall along the HainanGuangdong coast.

  • All flights to and from Haikou Meilan International Airport will be canceled from 11 p.m. local time on Saturday, according to Xinhua.
  • Haikou ordered a suspension of schools, work and city transport from Saturday afternoon through Sunday in advance of the storm.
  • China’s National Meteorological Centre issued an orange alert and forecast landfall on Sunday between Dianbai in Guangdong and Wanning in Hainan with strong winds and heavy rain.
  • The Hong Kong Observatory raised its tropical cyclone warning to Strong Wind Signal No. 3 at 12:20 p.m. and said it would assess the need for higher signals later on Saturday.
  • Officials warned of significant disruption to tourism and transportation during the National Day holiday, with 2.36 billion passenger trips expected nationwide and numerous Hainan events slated during the period.
