China Blacklists TechInsights After Huawei Chip Teardowns

Beijing cites national security, barring Chinese entities from sharing data with the Canadian teardown firm.

Overview

  • China's Ministry of Commerce named TechInsights an "unreliable entity" on Thursday, blocking Chinese individuals and organizations from doing business with it or providing information.
  • The designation covers TechInsights' Japanese, Korean and European entities as well as subsidiary Strategy Analytics, according to the ministry's list.
  • The action followed reports that Huawei's latest Ascend AI processors contained components from TSMC, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix despite tight export controls.
  • Independent research groups, including SemiAnalysis, published findings consistent with TechInsights' teardown conclusions about foreign-sourced parts in Huawei chips.
  • Analysts warn the move will reduce visibility into China's semiconductor supply chain, with the latest list also adding companies such as BAE Systems.
