China and Uruguay Seal Deeper Partnership, Sign 12 Cooperation Deals

Uruguay, whose top export market is China, seeks investment, broader market access, deeper cooperation.

  • Presidents Xi Jinping and Yamandu Orsi formalized a joint declaration deepening their strategic partnership and witnessed 12 agreements spanning science and technology, environmental cooperation, intellectual property, and the meat trade.
  • Xi urged both countries to work for an equal, orderly multipolar world and inclusive globalization, voicing support for Latin American sovereignty and development interests.
  • Orsi said the trip aims to empower Uruguay through opportunities, investment and development, leading a 150-strong delegation on a visit running through Feb. 7 that will also include Shanghai.
  • China was Uruguay’s top export destination in 2025 with US$3.493 billion in sales, or 26% of exports, led by beef, soy and cellulose, while Uruguay imports machinery, electronics and chemicals from China.
  • The visit features cultural diplomacy with stops at the Great Wall, the Palace Museum and the Museum of the CPC, alongside business events expected to pursue cooperation in agriculture, infrastructure, clean energy, dairy and services.
