China and Singapore Strengthen Ties with Visa-Free Travel and Upgraded Free Trade Agreement

The two countries sign 24 agreements at the JCBC meeting, covering areas such as sustainability, education, trade, and digital finance.

  • China and Singapore have agreed to introduce a mutual 30-day visa-free travel arrangement, aiming to implement it in early 2024. This will enhance people-to-people exchanges and fortify bilateral relations.
  • An upgraded free trade agreement was signed between Singapore and China, providing Singapore businesses with greater access to China's markets. This is one of 24 agreements and MOUs signed at the 19th Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) meeting.
  • The agreements cover areas such as sustainability, education, trade, food security, and healthcare, marking the most agreements signed in recent years.
  • The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the People’s Bank of China are embarking on a pilot to allow tourists from both countries to use digital yuan, or e-CNY, in Singapore and China.
  • A new bilateral policy dialogue platform, the Singapore-China Digital Policy Dialogue, will be established in the first half of 2024 to facilitate high-level discussions on developments and policy issues in the digital domain.
