Overview

  • India’s External Affairs Ministry said Wang Yi met National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on Aug. 19 and agreed to form an expert group on border settlement and a working group for effective border management.
  • Wang’s Aug. 18 meeting with S. Jaishankar produced a shared assessment of progress in ties and a description of the frontier as currently peaceful.
  • The ministers agreed to promote economic exchanges, including the early resumption of direct flights, smoother issuance of tourist and business visas, and steps to boost trade.
  • Chinese and Indian readouts framed the engagement as part of a return to a cooperative track following their 2024 leaders’ contact and a July 2025 ministerial in Beijing.
  • Reporting indicates the talks are laying groundwork for a possible Modi–Xi meeting around the SCO leaders’ gathering in Tianjin from Aug. 31, though any summit remains unconfirmed.
