Overview
- The Instituto Geofísico del Perú reported a magnitude 6.0 quake at 9:51 p.m. on Dec. 27, centered 67 km west of Chimbote at about 52 km depth, reaching intensity V in the city and felt along the coast including Lima.
- Aftershocks included magnitude 4.1 and 4.3 within hours of the mainshock and a magnitude 5.1 event on Dec. 28 detected 66 km west of Chimbote with intensity IV, as the Navy reiterated no tsunami risk.
- The Health Ministry reported 25 people injured, with 12 hospitalized, while regional authorities noted damaged or collapsed homes in La Libertad and minor rockfalls that temporarily affected routes such as Vinzos–Chuquicara and the Coishco tunnel.
