Chile Restores Patagonia's FMD-Free Status, Lifts Ban on Meat Imports

Formal implementation awaits publication of a Resolución Exenta in Chile's Diario Oficial.

Overview

  • The decision followed a September 8–12 on-site audit of the Patagonian zoosanitary barrier by SAG auditors Paula Cancino and Javier González.
  • SAG reinstated recognition of Patagonia Sur and Patagonia Norte B as free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination, reopening Chile to bovine and ovine products from the region.
  • The measure will take legal effect once the Resolución Exenta is published in the Diario Oficial de Chile.
  • SAG also signaled it will begin proceedings to restore Argentina's status as free of avian influenza after the recent outbreak was controlled.
  • Argentina's SENASA and the Agriculture Secretariat led the technical engagement cited by Chile, following concerns tied to bone-in meat movements from vaccinated zones into Patagonia.
