Chile Probes Massive 'Holiday Reñaca' Lodging Scam That Hit 200+ Argentine Families

The case is now under PDI investigation after the fake pages were taken down.

Overview

  • Scammers impersonated a real Reñaca property with a polished website, copied reviews, stolen photos and a WhatsApp business verification to secure advance payments.
  • Victims reported transfers up to about US$1,300, often via links and vouchers that listed a RUT and the business name “Conference Spa.”
  • After a public apology that quoted the Bible appeared on the fake site, authorities blocked the pages and the PDI took over the inquiry, with no arrests or recovered funds announced.
  • Property administrator Egon Pfaff said his identity and images were misused and he added warnings on Booking to stress that his rentals are only arranged through official channels.
  • Local agent Valentina Funes helped relocate tourists and estimates the scheme ensnared more than 200 families, as industry groups urged checks of RUTs and Sernatur registration and caution over unusually low prices.
