Child Dies After Fall From Channel Boat as Weekend Crossings Surge

Prosecutors have opened a criminal inquiry into the deaths during a weekend surge that taxed rescue teams.

Overview

  • French prosecutor Cécile Gressier said the child's body washed up on Écault beach near Boulogne-sur-Mer, with age and nationality yet to be confirmed, and a formal investigation under way.
  • Emergency commander Jonathan Caruso reported that 48 people from the same dinghy were rescued after falling into the sea and that the boat then continued toward England with about 50 still aboard.
  • A day earlier, two women died during a separate attempt near Neufchâtel-Hardelot, with roughly 100 people on the boat and about 60 rescued, as accounts of the cause of death differ and prosecutors seek to establish the circumstances.
  • The Pas-de-Calais prefecture reported 41 crossing attempts in less than 48 hours and described intense pressure on the coast, with authorities caring for more than 200 people rescued since Saturday morning.
  • UK figures indicate more than 33,300 arrivals by small boat so far this year, while the UK–France 'one in, one out' returns arrangement remains in place but has produced only a small number of removals to date.
