Chikungunya Outbreak in La Réunion Declared Under Control as Peak Passes

Public health officials report stabilization after over 27,500 cases, with military-led mosquito control and expanded vaccination efforts underway.

The chikungunya outbreak in La Réunion has surpassed its peak and is now considered under control, according to the island's health authorities.
Since January 2025, a total of 27,521 cases have been reported, including nearly 6,300 new cases in the last week of March.
The outbreak has resulted in two confirmed deaths and approximately 40 severe cases, primarily affecting vulnerable groups such as newborns, pregnant women, and the elderly.
A vaccination campaign targeting high-risk populations has seen limited uptake, with just 2,200 people vaccinated in three days; additional doses are expected by the end of April.
Military personnel have been deployed to assist with mosquito control operations, alongside the distribution of 20,000 mosquito nets to protect vulnerable individuals.
