Chiefs and Royals Finalize Stadium Proposal Amidst County Executive's Veto
Teams need six votes from the nine-person legislature to override the veto and keep the sales tax ordinance on the April ballot.
- The Chiefs and Royals are finalizing a letter of intent with the Jackson County Sports Complex Authority that represents agreement on 'virtually all of the principal terms' for their stadium proposals in the county.
- County Executive Frank White vetoed the sales tax ordinance, turning it back to the hands of the nine-person legislature for the final decision. In order to override White’s veto and keep the item on the April ballot, the teams need votes from six of the legislature’s nine members.
- The teams have recently branched off for negotiations with the JCSCA, which operates the Truman Sports Complex — home to Kauffman and Arrowhead stadiums.
- The teams addressed each of the 10 issues raised by the county legislators, including the location of the Royals' new downtown ballpark, the Chiefs' plans for renovations at Arrowhead Stadium, and the financial contributions of each team to the projects.
- The current stadium leases at the Truman Sports Complex expire in 2031. The teams have underscored the importance of the April ballot measure, stating that they have the support of the current governor’s office.
