Chicago’s Void Revives Chick-Feel-Gay Pop-Up to Fund LGBTQ+ Center

On June 22, the Italian American eatery donated 20% of proceeds to Brave Space Alliance by pairing gourmet fried chicken with a critique of Chick-fil-A’s history on LGBTQ+ issues.

Overview

  • Void’s Chick-Feel-Gay event in Avondale featured chef Dani Kaplan’s upscale take on Chick-fil-A staples from sandwiches and waffle fries to rainbow-flag cake.
  • Kaplan first launched the concept at Lost Lake in 2020 and brought it back this Pride Month at her Italian American restaurant.
  • Twenty percent of sales from the pop-up will support Brave Space Alliance, a Black trans-led LGBTQ+ center on Chicago’s South Side.
  • Organizers framed the menu as a protest of Chick-fil-A’s past donations to groups opposing LGBTQ+ rights despite the chain’s 2019 pledge to end such funding.
  • The initiative follows similar knock-off pop-ups nationwide, including Vermont chef Bryan Gildersleeve’s “Chic Full Gay” event in 2021.
